イトマキケイソウ亜目　Biddulphiineae

綱：不等毛植物の仲間。細胞壁が硅酸化されて、そこに複雑な模様のこまかい孔（真孔 eupole）があいている。
淡水にも海水にも見出される代表的な植物プランクトン。中心目は放射相称で、羽状目は左右相称。単細胞だが しばしば群体をつくる。

目：一般に殻の構造は点対称。卵生殖をする。
亜目：縁辺突起をもたない。極性がある。
基本的に二極性。中には三極性，多極性，そして円形のものもいる。
