綱/亜綱：多くは大形の細胞で、収縮性に富むものが多い。なかには細胞質内に色素を含むものがいる。独特の周口小膜域（adoral zone of membranelle, AZM）をもつが、繊毛は細胞全体に一様にある。大核は卵円形か数珠状のものが多い。寄生性・自由生活両方のタイプがある。
Somatic kinetidsは mono- or dikinetidsで，つぶれた形の細胞の両サイドに互いに近接して並んでいる。口部左側のpolykinetidsは先端部で丸く並ばない。例外は StentorとLicnophora。細胞はとがった形をしている。
目： Dikinetids のうち通常は前方のものだけから繊毛が発達する。口部左側の polykinetids はよく発達し，移動や捕食のために利用される。細胞体の繊毛（body cilia）は口部域まで侵入する。 suture がない。
Alveolar membrane system はあまり発達していない。多くの種は収縮性がある。 cytopyge がある。収縮胞は、collecting canals と大きな collecting vacuole からなる。
細胞は左右方向につぶれていない（例外：Blepharismidae）。共生するものはまれ。
一部は色素を含む。
亜目：目と同じ。ロリカをもつものはまれ。
科：細胞はトランペット形。収縮性がある。
