淡水・海水のいずれにも広く分布するが、記載された種はわずか150種ほどである。すべて自由生活型で、柄をもつものと自由遊泳するものとがある。群体をつくるものもいる。
微少で柔軟な細胞で、その前端部から１本の鞭毛がでている。鞭毛の基部は襟状の構造で囲まれている。襟状構造は、微細な微絨毛によって形成されている。また、細胞体は膜状のさや (theca)、あるいは箱状のロリカで覆われている。
　襟鞭毛虫は、海綿動物の襟細胞と形態的によく似ている。変形動物やワムシにも襟鞭毛虫に似た細胞がみられる。これらの形態的な類似性と分子系統学のデータから襟鞭毛虫から多細胞動物が進化した可能性が示唆されている。
科：細胞は鞘状の被い（theca）で囲まれている。光学顕微鏡で見える。
属：細胞（adult cell）には鞭毛がある。Thecaは通常フラスコ形で２層，部分的に厚みがある。外層は褐色の場合が多い。内層は薄く透明で外層を越えて外にとびだす。１本の鞭毛がよく発達した襟で囲まれている。
