門：葉緑体中にクロロフィル a, bを含み，光合成によりα-1, 4グルカンを主成分とするデンプン をつくり，葉緑体内に蓄える。緑色植物門には，種子植物，シダ植物，コケ植物など陸上にいる いわゆる「植物」の他に，ここで紹介する原生生物として生活するものもいる。
目：不動性の藻類。栄養細胞には眼点や収縮胞がない。
多細胞にならないが，群体をつくるものがいる。主に単核だが，多核のものもいる。 淡水浮遊藻および土壌藻の主要グループ。
