Colony ellipsoidal (or slightly ovoid or nearly spherical), posterior end wavy, consisting of 32 or 16 cells, 60-130 μm long, 50-106 μm wide; colony of 32 cells formed by a stacking of five chaplets; cells of anteriorly-located chaplet slightly smaller than others); cells spherical or pear-shaped, 5.5-18 μm in diam.; chloroplast cup-shaped, with a pyrenoid posteriorly; stigma large, located anteriorly; sexual reproduction by heterogamy, all cells of the colony form spermatozoon or oocytes (Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa 9, Chlorophyta I, 1983).
